What is Intraoral Massage? Can it help with TMD?
What is intraoral massage?
A client receiving intraoral massage during a head, neck and face treatment.
Also called Buccal Massage or Intraoral Buccal Massage, this requires speciality training. The massage therapist wears sterile gloves and massages the muscles of mastication inside the mouth. In this practice, techniques are slow with ample communication between client and therapist.
It is used to relieve discomfort and pain from injury, stiff jaw, and joint disfunction. Many people refer to their TMJ - which is the joint itself. Manual Therapy is helpful to relieve symptoms of the muscular pain and tension and disfunction, referred to as TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders).
The primary muscles targeted are the Masseter, Medial and Lateral Pterygoids, as well as Temporalis externally and internally.
These muscles are dynamic is chewing, clenching, talking, jaw mobilization, stabilization, and facial expression. They may become tight, tender with or without trigger points due to clenching and grinding (bruxism) during sleep, mental and emotional stress, and by postural deviations of the upper body and neck.
We also work externally with muscles of the neck, below the tongue, and upper body as indicated.
Self-massage instruction is available for clients to practice at home.
